LP · 2025 · Taioba Discos (Brazil)
Holoceno, the debut album by Paraíba-based band Papangu, is now released in Brazil for the first time in a special 180g marbled red vinyl edition, exclusively by Taioba Discos. Praised by national and international critics for its innovative sound and impactful themes, the album presents a conceptual narrative inspired by ecological eschatology and Northeastern Brazilian modernist literature, notably influenced by Ariano Suassuna and João Cabral de Melo Neto. Holoceno tells the saga of a cangaceiro haunted by an apocalyptic vision who, in an attempt to alter his fate, inadvertently triggers an ecological catastrophe. To stop the impending disaster, the protagonist resorts to a Faustian pact. Musically, the work spans sludge metal, progressive rock, stoner rock, zeuhl, and traditional Northeastern Brazilian rhythms, evoking references ranging from Mastodon and King Crimson to regional psychedelia from the 1970s. Recorded between João Pessoa and Oslo, with special contributions from renowned Norwegian drummer Torstein Lofthus (Elephant9, SHINING), keyboardists Uaná Barreto and Luís Souto Maior, and saxophonist Benjamin Mekki Widerøe (Seven Impale), the album impresses with its instrumental power and rhythmic and lyrical complexity. This exclusive Taioba Discos edition includes three live tracks, available as digital downloads alongside the vinyl. Following the success of the release of Lampião Rei in early 2025, this marks Papangu's second album released through the Paraíba-based label, setting the stage for the band's anticipated first European tour in September 2025, where they will also record their next album. A landmark in Brazilian experimental music, Holoceno offers an intense and unforgettable sonic journey, now immortalized in the analog experience of vinyl.
